Write to Heal

Some medicine is prescribed to us. Some we practice ourselves — and for many of us, writing is exactly that.

The practice

Healing, in your own words

Write to Heal is a pairing. We each write our own reflection — privately, in our own words — side by side, in a circle that witnesses what we choose to share. Writing on its own can heal, and being witnessed on its own can heal; our method braids the two.

Some stories sit in the body and in our memories for years before we find words to express them. There is real evidence that we carry our hardest experiences more heavily when we keep them in silence — and that writing them down can lighten that weight much the way telling someone would, without our having to say a word aloud.

Each circle is a handful of prompts, a room that holds what is said in confidence, and the patient work of putting our experiences into words. No experience is asked for; everyone who writes is a writer here.

As much as we write, we witness one another — full attention, no judgment, no fixing, just the freedom to heal at your own pace.

The arc

The Write-to-Heal spiral

Healing rarely moves in a straight line. It spirals — circling back on the same places, going a little deeper each time. A circle moves through four movements, at whatever pace it needs.

The Write to Heal spiral: honoring my life as it is; connecting with my feelings about my life; making meaning of my life; moving forward into what is possible
  1. Honoring my life as it is

We start with what is: the life we're actually living, looked at plainly, accepted and honored, unjudged, before we try to change a thing.

  2. Connecting with my feelings about my life

We let the feelings come — grief, anger, tenderness, joy — and give them room on the page instead of ignoring or avoiding them.

  3. Making meaning of my life

We look at our experience again, with new eyes — for the pattern, the meaning, the reframe, what it cost us and what it may still be teaching.

  4. Moving forward into what is possible

We turn toward what's next and take a step — not because the past is erased, but because we've changed and the past no longer has the last word.

How the circle holds you

The circle is a container built on trust. Before we write, we agree to a few things — so that everyone can go as deep as they choose.

  • Be brave on the page. You never have to be brave in the room — your writing is private, and what you share is always your choice.
  • If writing about a topic is too much to handle, write about something else.
  • Confidentiality: what's shared in the circle stays in the circle.
  • No cross-talk: we don't speak over one another, and we don't question, advise, or comment on someone's share. The urge to respond is usually about our own discomfort — witnessing means letting a share simply be received.
  • Listen with compassion, curiosity, and openness — a desire to understand, without judgment.
  • Allow others the freedom to heal.
  • Don't try to fix anyone.
  • We are all responsible for creating a welcoming environment.
Voices from the circle

In their words

“Write to Heal is a very special meet-up. Robert, the facilitator, provides a comfortable space, supportive environment, and presents an array of writing topics or prompts allowing participants to take pen to paper. The beauty found in this process is that each writer has the ability to go deep, access thoughts and emotions which they may have not thought about, forgot, or never realized were present. Even more magical is when members of the group read their work aloud (sharing your work is optional). It is in this space when group members connect, realize they are not alone, remember we all have similar struggles, and feel the same joy, pain, and sadness. This is when the healing happens. I have been a member of the group for roughly a year and Write to Heal was the lifeline I needed.”

“Thank you for creating and maintaining this group, Robert, and to everyone who attends. I was so inspired after attending tonight, I wrote another two pages.”
